As a solopreneur you are the sole keeper of your message.
The 2013 State of Independence in America reports that almost 18 million Americans identify as solopreneurs. Every solopreneur’s message is unique: here’s is who I am and what I can bring to the table as a business individual. Nobody believes in a solopreneur’s message more than themselves. This is why inspirational figures like Eric Thomas are so dynamic- it’s not just a job, it’s a gut-burning, bone-deep passion that we can’t ignore.
I work with a variety of solopreneurs: writers, authors, speakers, success coaches, personal trainers. I only provide content coaching, not content creation for solopreneurs. If I start doing all the writing and social media content creation for them, it starts to sound like me and not like them.
One of the biggest obstacles for any solopreneur is keeping a consistent message across multiple content platforms. Whether it’s Facebook, YouTube, blogging, or public speaking, your message is only as strong as the consistency driving your delivery. Your audience needs to know they’re getting the real you every single time they engage with any piece of your content.
Important principles should be kept in mind when solopreneurs build a consistent message across content platforms.
Know your audience on each specific platform
Spoiler alert: social media is very different from public speaking. You don’t have the body language and audible responses of listeners responding to your message. In the same way blogging is a very different medium than writing a full-length book. People expect a more formal delivery in both a book and keynote setting. The audience members will also differ from one context to the next. Know your audience in each context.
Know how to best adapt your message
Don’t change the message; change the delivery according to the channel where you’re sharing your message. You wouldn’t address a group of ten the same way you’d deliver a keynote in an arena of 10,000. The same is true for your content message: know how to adapt your message to fit the moment.
Make your personality show through each piece of content
Your audience has come to trust you based on the personality they’ve come to expect from you. People have built legends of themselves based on personality. Hello, Lady Gaga, Donald Trump, and Chris Farley! Don’t write to be noticed; write with your truest sense of self in mind.
Find the right content channels for your message
Blogging can be awkward for someone who’s a natural public speaker. This past fall I had a dynamic client of mine tell me she was just frustrated with blogging. She’s a great public speaker and couldn’t identify why blogging was such a chore. I told her, “Are you a speaker who writes, or a writer who also speaks?” This gave her the freedom to realize she needed to show her personality through a more natural content channel: podcasting. Your message is more effective inside your most natural content channels.
It takes work, lots and lots and lots of work to build a consistent message across many content platforms. I can help give you the direction, insight, and strategies you need to effectively build your platform. Your message is too important to just throw at the wall and hope something sticks. My experience working with dynamic solopreneurs has given me the skills to make your platform grow.
